Clashing Classification: Negotiation and Diplomacy in the Design and Governance of Information
When we’re working in complex information spaces, collaborating with humans and machines, how do we balance the needs of machines with the conflicting world views of individual people? How do we negotiate between the structures our machine-driven applications require and our positions as humans who truly do work in ambiguity and often hold many conflicting truths at once? How do we diplomatically explain and explore these conflicting classifications with our non-IA colleagues who are less comfortable with ambiguous spaces?
Based on over a decade of experience arguing with stakeholders about taxonomy details, this talk explores the ways in which we, as information architects, can set ourselves up for success with our human stakeholders so that our AI-driven applications are, too.
