Our “Introduction to Ontology Concepts and Modeling” workshop comprises a three-hour introduction aimed at IAs who are interested in ontologies and would like to learn the basics, including:
- Complex knowledge organization schemes and concept structures
- Basics of ontological relationships
- Information on existing ontologies for re-use
- The difference between upper and lower ontologies
- Basic ontology concepts like RDF and semantic triples
- Software systems and components
- Ontology modeling exercises

About the speakers
Ahren E. Lehnert is an information and knowledge management professional with over twenty years’ experience in taxonomy, text analytics, search, and content and records management. He has developed enterprise taxonomies and knowledge development and retrieval strategies as a consultant and full-time employee in a broad range of industries. Ahren is Principal Taxonomist at NIKE, Inc., the world’s largest supplier of athletic shoes and apparel and a major manufacturer of sports equipment.
Bob is an information architect at Factor. As taxonomist and ontologist with an interest in knowledge graphs and Linked Data, he has worked for over a decade building and implementing taxonomy projects for publishing, enterprise, technology, and e-commerce clients. He brings experience with information modeling and semantic software to client-focused metadata and vocabulary projects.
A frequent writer and presenter on semantic topics in conferences and journals, Bob’s current research interests include ontologies, knowledge graphs, and text classification. Still active teaching and playing music, Bob has been a member of the local ensemble Gamelan Encantada for the past several years. He lives in Albuquerque with his wife.
