Structured Content in the Age of AI: The Ticket to the Promised Land?
Some suggest that we no longer need structured content with large language models (LLMs) and generative pre-trained transformers (like ChatGPT) gaining traction. If you hold up this argument against information with inherent structure – like an event – it can be convincing. But what happens when the information source is more complex and inherently ambiguous?
In 2023, generative AI reached the peak of inflated expectations on the hype cycle and began to fall into the trough of disillusionment. We collectively started asking what AI can help us do, and rightly so.
As we approach the middle of the decade, it is clear that generative AI is here to stay. We are people who care about, advocate for, and use information architecture to make sense of the messy world of information. Is structured content the thing we need to bridge the gap between where we are and the promised land?
Let’s explore this question together. It is only by asking questions that we move toward answers that make sense in any given circumstance. Because the answer is always “it depends.” But what does it depend upon?
