Know your Gatekeepers – How to Sell Taxonomy as a Product

2019 IA Conference /

Time(s)

March 23, 2019
4:15 PM to 5:00 PM CT

Location

Peninsula 5-6

Description

IA projects often need approval from gatekeepers who don’t fully understand your complex project. In this talk, a product manager and a taxonomist will present a case study of the tools they used to convince executives, engineers, and analysts to buy into a complex data and IA project. Learn how a team of 4 people with no engineers or designers made a business case to launch sitewide filters on Etsy.com.

After hearing our story, you’ll walk away with a toolbox of tips and techniques from product management and analytics that will enable you, your product team, and finally, your company to say yes.

About the speakers

Elizabeth Graefe

Elizabeth Graefe has been an e-commerce taxonomist for 10+ years, designing data structures for everything from prison furniture to bridal gowns. She manages a small team of taxonomists at Etsy, where together they drive structured data strategy to deliver the right information at the right time in a user’s journey.

Matt Nicole

Matt Nicole is a Staff Product Manager at Etsy focused on Category Experiences, Structured Data, and Taxonomy connecting buyers and sellers through data.  His ten years of product management and twenty years of software development experience allow him to solve unique problems at the intersection of people and data.

He’s worked as a product manager in e-commerce, data science, publishing, mobile, email, ed-tech, hosting, and social networking at companies very large and very small.

Matt’s a long time lurker, first time speaker.  He’s really excited to be here.  He’s not just saying that.
