Pre-Conference WorkshopTopic(s): information architecture, knowledge graph, and ontology
Tuesday, April 14, 2020
8:30 AM–12:30 PM
Half-day workshop (morning)
With knowledge graphs bubbling up into popular and business consciousness (lots of chatter on social media, recent articles in Forbes and WSJ) it seems fitting to ask how this technology is relevant to the IA community (it is!) and provide an introduction to graph-curious IAs.
I envision a half-day workshop covering:
1) An introduction and definitions: what is a knowledge graph? Is it an ontology? Is it a graph database? What’s the difference?
2) Introduction to and overview of relevant technologies (graph databases and other interfaces)
3) How this technology is relevant to the practice of IA
4) A short hands-on activity to reinforce concepts and get attendees thinking in graphs
I am co-leading a similar workshop at a taxonomy conference in October 2019 (different audience, different focus, same concepts) and think that IAs are also interested in this topic but perhaps don’t know how to get started.
About the speaker(s)
Ahren E. Lehnert is an information management professional with over fifteen years’ experience in taxonomy, text analytics, search, and content and records management. He has developed enterprise taxonomies in a consulting capacity for clients in a broad range of industries. Ahren is now Senior Manager, Text Analytics Solutions at Synaptica, LLC, a provider of taxonomy and text analytics products and services.
Bob Kasenchak’s interest in information science began while working at Schwann Publications in the late 1990s. Publishing a quarterly phone-book-sized classical music catalog featuring carefully controlled synonymic records and standardization of terms suggested the necessity for hierarchical data structures in the service of organizing information about composers and musical works. After a decade studying and teaching music, Bob spent 8 years designing and developing information projects at a leading taxonomy firm before joining Synaptica in 2019.
