Gifts from Your Past Self – Turning Legacy Content Into a Chatbot

2019 IA Conference /

Time(s)

March 17, 2019
1:15 PM to 2:00 PM CT

Description

When you structure your content well, legacy content becomes a strength rather than a challenge. Once upon a time, our team built content for social media using beautiful imagery and engaging messaging, but even the best content was forgotten once it fell off people’s timelines. After more than five years on Facebook, we restructured our website to bring in this high-performing content. Two years after that, that structure was able to drive an API to use that content in a chatbot. This is the story of the National Cancer Institute’s Smokefree Chatbot, and how one team used structured content across the years. Learn how planning ahead by structuring your content is one of the best gifts you can give your future self.

About the speakers

Christine Leake

Christine Leake has over a decade of experience in Technical Communication and Content Strategy. Her expertise encompasses accessibility compliance, user experience, and information architecture. Her clients have ranged from think-tanks to universities to National Institutes of Health.

Christine’s work has helped public health clients improve how they reach users. Websites are no longer enough. Strategies need to meet users where they are, which often means including text messaging, social media, and (more and more frequently) chatbots. Christine works on chatbots that help users make a lifestyle change like quitting smoking or biking to work. She’s excited to see where the field of AI will head next.
