Making sense of tabular information on mobile: The re-emergence of the Rolodex in digital form

IAC 2020
Main Conference Talk
April 10, 2020

Description

Tabular information typically does not work with mobile platforms, so this data (if it can be) should be presented in a more mobile friendly format.

This presentation will outline the usefulness of “exploding” a typical database of tabular information into “bitesize cards” of information that have the same filter and sort options of a typical table of data.

We will outline the design challenges, the successes, and the failures of a specific report’s re-design into information cards, as well as an overview of the kinds of tabular information where this presentation of data might work best.

Key takeaways from the session:

When and if a designer should suggest a card based display of tabular data that can be sorted and ordered and filtered and flipped through much like a Rolodex. It’s a metaphor, no skew morphism.
